Watch: Mariah Carey’s Iconic 3-Word Response to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Wedding
Mariah Carey is shaking it off.
In fact, the Grammy winner didn’t even flinch after she was asked about her absence at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez‘s recent Venice nuptials, which boasted a star-studded guest list that included Kim Kardashian, LeonardoDiCaprio and Tom Brady.
When a paparazzo posed the question to Mariah as she stepped out to dinner in Los Angeles July 5, she simply adjusted her sunglasses and quipped back, “I wasn’t there.”
The 56-year-old went on to shut down speculation of a feud, telling the photographer after he asked if she had even received an invite from the couple, “Oh, don’t turn this into that.”
Her blunt response gave off a similar vibe to her iconic “I don’t know her” comment, which she uttered back in the early aughts when asked about Jennifer Lopez. And while GIFs of her remark have been used to throw shade online, the intention behind Mariah’s words is actually anything but snide.
“I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all,” she told Pitchfork in 2018. “I really was.”
As for how her four-word answer has since taken a life of its own? “It is what it is,” Mariah said. “You have to embrace it.”
For what it’s worth, J.Lo has also embraced the viral meme.

“I think she’s incredibly talented and I’ve always been a fan of hers,” Jennifer told Andy Cohen in 2014. “‘My All’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just love her. It saddens me to hear anything that’s negative because I’m a fan of hers.”
And when Wendy Williams joked about it during a 2016 interview, the “On the Floor” singer quipped back, “She’s forgetful, I guess!”
J.Lo added, “We’ve met many times. I don’t know her that well.”
