Mars achieves 100% renewable electricity across US operations

June 18, 2026

Snacking giant Mars, Incorporated has announced that all of its US operations are now powered by 100% renewable electricity, which the group has announced as a ‘major milestone’ in its sustainability efforts.

Mars made the announcement in its 2025 Sustainable in a Generation Report, in which it also reported a 42.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions against a 2015 baseline. Last year also saw it deliver a 6.4% reduction in GHG emissions across its full value chain, its largest annual decline to date.

“Reaching a milestone of 100% renewable electricity in our direct U.S. operations – from factories to offices, from veterinary hospitals to diagnostic labs – it’s something to celebrate and be proud of,” commented Poul Weihrauch, Mars chief executive.

“Building a resilient business includes access to clean and accessible energy, farmers that are not at the mercy of extreme weather events and communities that thrive across our full value chain. Our priority is to continue our efforts to generate good jobs, support our associates and communities, and continuing to work towards a more resilient and sustainable future for all.”

According to Mars, the latest green energy milestone has brought the company’s cumulative absolute emissions reduction to 16.9% against a 2015 baseline, while the business has grown by approximately 75% over the same period.

Elsewhere, the group is seeking to bolster its energy security with the launch of the Renewables Acceleration (RAcc) programme, which is designed to extend renewable electricity beyond its direct operations and into its broader value chain. It estimates that the initiative could reduce emissions by around three million tonnes by 2030, equivalent to roughly 10% of its 2025 carbon footprint.

As part of the RAcc programme, Mars recently signed an agreement with Enel North America to support three new solar projects in Texas (pictured), which will generate around 1.80 TWh of renewable electricity annually, for both Mars and its supplier network.

In addition to investments to reduce and convert energy consumption, Mars has implemented wind and solar projects that generate Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) equivalent to the amount of electricity used in the company’s direct operations across the United States.

As well as energy-based initiatives, Mars continues to expand its climate-smart agriculture initiatives, which include a portfolio of approximately 77 projects across 26 countries and 12 agricultural commodities.

“The hard work of our associates and partners in 2025 demonstrates how sustainability sits at the centre of how we plan, invest and operate,” added Alastair Child, Mars chief sustainability officer. “Delivering impact at scale requires collaboration across industries, suppliers, governments, NGOs and local communities, and we remain focused on turning ambition into measurable progress across our value chain.” Read more here.
