MARYLAND– State environmental officials want Marylanders to celebrate Independence Day with sustainability in mind.

The Maryland Department of the Environment is encouraging people to grill greener by using lump charcoal or choosing gas, propane, or electric grills instead of traditional briquettes.

Officials also recommend ditching disposable items. Instead, party hosts are encouraged to use reusable plates, utensils and drinkware to cut down on waste.

Shopping local can also help the environment, the agency notes. Farmers markets are a great option for finding fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

The department suggests setting up a recycling station with clear signage for guests, and reminds hosts that recycling rules vary depending on the area.

To further reduce waste, environmental staff recommend making a plan for leftovers to ensure food doesn’t get thrown out.
