Mass Effect TV series is “on the verge” at Prime Video after Amazon orders major rewrites
April 6, 2026
Prime Video is achieving what other streaming services would love to: securing the rights to various video game franchises and adapting them into TV series. Following the success of the first two seasons of ‘Fallout’, Amazon Studios is already working on ‘God of War’—which has already cast its lead actors—as well as a ‘Mass Effect’ series. However, the latter, which is still in pre-production, has faced significant changes.
According to a new report by The Ankler, Peter Friedlander, Head of Global TV at Amazon MGM Studios, has requested rewrites to make the series “more appealing to non-gamers.” As the outlet reports, this puts the series “on the verge” of being greenlit or canceled. It remains unclear what is meant by “more appealing to non-gamers,” since the space opera elements that the series has maintained since its inception could be considered quite “mainstream” in terms of science fiction. Unless, of course, the options available to the viewer constantly pop up in the middle of conversations—which would be something that annoys the audience.
A story set within the universe, but separate from the games
The last update we received about the series came on N7 Day, when Mike Gamble, the series’ executive producer, spoke about what we could expect from the story, confirming that it would not revisit any elements of the original trilogy, particularly those involving Commander Shepard. At the time, he mentioned that “The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story—because after all… that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”

For now, and considering what was done with ‘Fallout’, exploring these worlds beyond a frame-by-frame adaptation has proven successful, expanding the universes we already know a little further. Production is currently scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, provided this rewrite doesn’t cause any delays.
