McKinney airport expansion plans challenged in federal court over environmental concerns

May 28, 2025

In a challenge to the planned expansion of the McKinney National Airport, a North Texas conservation group is asking a federal court to review the Texas Department of Transportation’s finding that development at the airport will not significantly impact the environment.

In April, TxDOT issued a document concluding the proposed eastside development at the airport would not have significant environmental impacts.

The North Texas Conservation Association, NTCA, alleges the environmental assessment does not meet the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and filed a petition Monday asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to review the department’s findings.

“We believe the environmental assessment done on the McKinney airport expansion is seriously flawed,” Paul Chabot, president of the NTCA, said in a statement. “It fails to fully and adequately consider environmental impacts in the vicinity of the airport, such as the Heard Museum and residential areas in McKinney and Fairview. The people of North Texas deserve better.”

The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a 289-acre nature preserve in McKinney.

A spokesperson for McKinney said Wednesday morning the city is working on a statement.
