Medical cannabis suppliers consider future in Virginia’s retail marketplace

Manassas, Va. (WDBJ) – If you take a tour with Trent Woloveck, be prepared to cover a lot of ground.
The Chief Strategy Director for Jushi Holdings, Woloveck recently led us through the company’s two-story, 100-thousand square foot facility near Manassas.
As the state moves closer to establishing a retail marketplace for cannabis, Jushi is one of the pharmaceutical processors in Virginia that hopes to supply the retail market.
“This is our mothers room,” Woloveck explained on one of our first stops. “Here we’re able to take clones of each genetic and we’ll start a perpetual harvest process to ensure standardization of product.”
Woloveck ushered us through different parts of the building, where we saw plants at different stages of development.
“We’re an agricultural business,” he explained. “You don’t just turn on a machine and produce more widgets. We have to plan six months in advance for products we want six months in the future.”
Ultimately, we also visited areas where the plants are processed, and cannabis oil is refined for vapes, gummies, and other infused products.
Each plant in the facility is tagged, and tracked from seed to sale. And that, Woloveck said, is one of the major advantages of a regulated marketplace.
“And so everything we have here is independently third-party tested. People want to consume cannabis, so let’s ensure that they’re consuming safe, tested, quality product.” Woloveck said. “The other thing is nobody under the age of 21 should be consuming the product. Unfortunately, when it’s unregulated there’s no way to enforce that.”
Woloveck said the current medical cannabis market in Virginia accounts for about $180 million to $200 million a year.
He said the retail adult-use market could be 20 times that.
“We know there’s a billion plus market that’s being served right now by the illicit market,” Woloveck told WDBJ7. “And so there’s a $4-billion market opportunity for the Commonwealth when it comes to retail cannabis sales. And so we’re looking forward to being a small cog in that marketplace here in Virginia.”
Jushi is moving forward with a $30-million expansion of its operation in northern Virginia, a project that would essentially double its production there.
