Meta Explains Upcoming Removal of Quest Feature
March 19, 2025
Summary
- Meta Quest VR headset losing Move fitness tracking due to lack of user adoption.
- CTO Andrew Bosworth explained Move app discontinuation after fan backlash.
- No replacement planned, users advised to explore external fitness tracker options.
Meta Quest virtual reality headsets will soon be losing their Move fitness tracking feature, and now the CTO has explained why. It’s not the first feature that’s been taken out of the Meta Quest system, as the company has also pulled the scoreboard app from the headset.
Meta Move is the Quest VR headset line’s built-in fitness tracking app, which monitors what players are doing with their hands, head, and entire body movement. From movement data and basic information about the user, the Move app not only keeps track of how much a user moves, but gives an approximation of how many calories they’ve burned while using the device. However, fans of the app weren’t thrilled to learn that it would be discontinued soon.

A quite popular but polemical cult shooter title from the early 2000s is making a comeback for modern virtual reality platforms.
Now, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has provided some insight on why the Move app will be discontinued on March 31. The CTO recently held an “Ask Me Anything” session and shared a video answering a fan’s query as to why the Meta Move app was being discontinued. Bosworth apologized for the change, and explained that he’s aware that some Quest users are very fond of the feature and use it regularly, but that it hasn’t been utilized by enough Quest owners for the company to continue supporting it. He says that the “small but loyal crowd” isn’t enough to “justify the expense of maintaining it.”
Unfortunately, from the sound of it, Meta has no plan to replace the Move feature with anything else. However, gamers who want to use the Meta Quest for fitness purposes can try and use other workarounds. For example, using an external fitness tracker is one option, while some fitness games and apps provide their own in-app tracking features. However, one of the biggest benefits of the Move app was that it could synchronize with a user’s phone, allowing them to see their stats either in the Oculus app or through Apple Health. Losing this ability may make getting fit in VR slightly less appealing for some users.
Meta often tinkers with ideas for both the development of its products and for apps and features for shipped headsets. Not all of these concepts stick, however. For example, some Meta VR headset prototypes have allegedly been canceled before they ever made it to consumers, and the Meta Quest Pro struggled to move as many units as the company had hoped. Only time will tell if any other apps or features on the Quest line end up being discontinued.
