Meta will lay off about 600 staffers at its Superintelligence Labs, according to multiple reports citing an internal memo from the company’s AI leader.

The cuts, which were first reported by Axios, will reportedly target certain divisions of the company’s Superintelligence Labs—including employees at its FAIR AI research lab, its AI product division, and AI infrastructure division.
They will not impact Meta’s TBD Lab, its newly formed unit tasked with building the company’s next generation of large language models.
Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang characterized the layoffs as a restructuring move, insisting the cuts will mean “fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” according to the memo.
The memo said employees will learn their job status by Wednesday morning, and encouraged them to apply for other jobs at Meta.
Meta’s stock slumped slightly after news of the layoffs broke, but its roughly 0.6% decline early Wednesday afternoon was not as steep as major index declines.
Meta did not immediately return a request for comment from Forbes.

The layoffs come only months after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg pursued a multi-billion dollar effort to scale up the social media company’s AI efforts, which he announced in June would be handled by a “Superintelligence Lab.” That same month, Meta announced a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, the company co-founded by Wang, and recruited him to run its AI division. The company also spent billions recruiting more AI researchers away from competitors like OpenAI.
