Meta Platforms Looks Undervalued After Strong Q1 Earnings and AI Growth Potential

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) appears to be a compelling investment opportunity following a decline in its stock price after an earnings report that was strong overall. According to a recent analysis from Yahoo Finance, the company’s current situation may be reminiscent of Alphabet in early 2025, before artificial intelligence developments drove a significant rally.

Meta Platforms Q1 Earnings Were Strong

The company reported first-quarter revenue of $56.3 billion, a 33% increase compared to the same period last year, driven by continued growth in online advertising. This figure compares to Alphabet’s Google ad revenue of $77.3 billion, indicating Meta is narrowing the gap in the online advertising market and growing at a faster rate than its competitor.

Although higher-than-expected capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence raised some concerns among investors, Meta Platforms still achieved a 61% year-over-year increase in net income. The report noted that the company’s profits and profit margins are trending positively, suggesting that criticism over rising AI spending may be unwarranted.

Investors also expressed unease about a small sequential decline in daily active users. However, that metric was still up 4% year over year. Meta Platforms attributed the sequential drop to internet disruptions in Iran and a restriction on WhatsApp access in Russia.

Guidance Points to Continued Growth

For the second quarter of 2026, Meta Platforms issued revenue guidance with a midpoint of $59.5 billion, implying year-over-year growth of 25.2%. This growth rate is higher than what Alphabet typically reports in a quarter and suggests the company continues to capture a larger share of the online advertising market.

This performance is not limited to a short period. Over the past three years, Meta Platforms has maintained an annualized revenue growth rate of 19.9%. The analysis indicated that this foundation, combined with artificial intelligence initiatives, has contributed to a recent acceleration in growth that is expected to persist in the second quarter.

Meta Platforms Is in the Early Stages of Diversification

While Meta Platforms still depends heavily on online advertising revenue—unlike Alphabet, which has expanded into Google Cloud, Gemini, Waymo, and other ventures—the company is pursuing its own diversification efforts. The analysis suggested that these initiatives are not yet reflected in the stock’s valuation.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the release of the company’s first AI model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, with a goal of delivering personal superintelligence to billions of people. Meta Platforms has significant capital and profits available to invest in AI models until those services become profitable.
