Meta Quest 3 Users Lose A Key Feature This Month

March 18, 2025

Meta has made a further statement about an in-house feature leaving the Meta Quest platform at the end of March.

Quest Move is being discontinued on March 31, and Meta’s head of Reality Labs Andrew Bosworth has commented on the move as part of an Instagram AMA session, as spotted by Mixed-News.

“We have a small but loyal crowd who really uses this app. Unfortunately, it is not enough of a crowd to justify the expense of continuing to maintain it and keep it going,” says Bosworth.

“We’ve done this a couple times recently, and every time we do it, obviously it tremendously affects people in the community who rely on it, who are using it, and that sucks. So I am sorry about that. That is what happened there.”

One other notable removal he’s referring to here is Meta’s Scoreboards, which were removed in December 2024.

What Is Quest Move?

Move is a neat concept that tracks your activity while using a Quest headset across games and apps, a little like a step counter mobile app running in the background on a phone. It will also estimate how many calories you burn over VR sessions.

“Calories burned are estimated through an algorithm that considers your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and your headset, controller and hand movements. BMR depends on your age, weight, height and sex. You can choose to provide your age, weight, height and sex or rely on averages instead,” reads Meta’s explanation of the feature.

Meta first announced the discontinuation of Move in an email sent to users on March 1, stating its use of “legacy technology… limits our ability to introduce new innovations for Quest users.”

This suggests the difficulty in justifying ongoing support for Move may be rooted in the shift in motion controller technology used in the Quest 2 and Quest 3, alongside its limited popularity.

While some may not find the idea of working out with a VR headset on too appealing, VR workouts have proved to be quite popular on Meta Quest, including FitXR, Les Mills Bodycombat and VR boxing title The Thrill of the Fight.

Of course, Move adds an extra step to the process that mostly makes sense if a VR fan is hopping between different VR training and fitness apps regularly.

Meta’s Reality Labs division was reportedly charged with reducing its spending by 20% in late 2024, with a deadline of 2026, putting increased pressure on features like Quest Move to justify their existence.

Quest Move was released in 2020 shortly after the arrival of the Quest 2 headset, and at the time was known as Oculus Move. While it may feel like ancient history to VR fans, the Meta rebrand only fully took hold in 2022.
