Meta Quest: Wooorld now offers an immersive Google Earth VR experience

The Meta Quest app Wooorld now offers fully immersive world exploration similar to Google Earth VR, among other improvements.

Wooorld was released in the fall of 2022 for Meta Quest 2. My main criticism at the time was that the digital version of the world was rendered within rectangular boundaries, which negatively impacted immersion.

Not anymore: With the major 2.0 update released this Christmas, you can now fully immerse yourself in the 3D maps of the world. In immersive mode, Wooorld looks and feels similar to Google Earth VR on PC: you fly in the direction you point with the controller.

The resolution and detail of the 3D maps on Meta Quest 3 is good enough, and the Google Maps integration makes everything feel very familiar. I think Wooorld will become my go-to app for planning trips and familiarizing myself with a destination in virtual reality.

In addition to the immersive mode, the 2.0 update also brought the following new features:

  • Full Google Earth Catalog: Explore over 2,500+ 3D cities
  • Conversational AI Assistant: Interact with Wooorld in a whole new way—it can answer any question, take you anywhere, see what you’re seeing, and even play trivia games with you (premium feature)
  • Minimap, Social Hub, Tabletop Mode, Simplified Controls and a lot more…

The following trailer shows the current version of the app, including the immersive mode and tabletop mode.

There are two alternatives

Wooorld has changed a lot since my review more than two years ago. The VR app, which now also supports mixed reality, is rich in features that I need to test before I can review Wooorlds again.

Since its launch, two other apps have appeared that also offer immersive world exploration similar to Google Earth VR, with different advantages and disadvantages, which are described in the following articles:

Please note that all three apps are under development and in flux.

You can purchase Wooorld, Fly and EarthQuest from the Horizon Store.
