Meta rebrands roles as ‘AI Builders’ in reality labs restructuring
March 30, 2026
Meta is reportedly overhauling its Reality Labs division as part of a broader shift toward artificial intelligence-led operations. The restructuring affects a group of around 1,000 employees.
The move signals a deeper push to integrate AI into core workflows and reshape how teams function internally.
As part of the change, traditional roles are being replaced with new titles such as AI builder, AI pod lead and AI org lead. Teams are being reorganised into smaller, outcome-focused units, internally referred to as pods. Each pod is expected to work on specific goals, often cutting across functions such as engineering and design.
The shift is aligned with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader vision of creating a flatter organisation. The new structure reduces layers of hierarchy and encourages employees to take on multiple responsibilities depending on project needs. Engineers, for instance, may also contribute to design tasks within these smaller teams.
Pod leads are responsible for managing daily execution, while org leads oversee larger groups and handle performance-related decisions such as appraisals and promotions. These processes are expected to be supported by internal AI systems, reflecting the company’s growing reliance on automation in management functions.
The reorganisation comes amid increasing emphasis on AI’s role in productivity. Earlier, Zuckerberg indicated that advances in AI could significantly reduce the need for large teams, with highly-skilled individuals able to deliver outcomes that once required entire groups.
While the company has recently carried out layoffs across multiple divisions, including Reality Labs, it has clarified that the current restructuring is not linked to those job cuts. Instead, the changes are positioned as a long-term strategic shift to improve efficiency and product quality through AI-driven collaboration.
