Meta (NASDAQ:META)didn’t see much movement in its stock on Wednesday, even though Italy just dialed up the pressure on the company’s AI efforts inside WhatsApp. The Italian competition watchdog, AGCM, has already been digging into Meta since July, and now it’s widening the investigation to look at the new business terms Meta introduced for WhatsApp in October.

The concern from regulators is pretty straightforward: they think Meta may have slipped its Meta AI assistant into WhatsApp without getting clear permission from users, and they’re worried the updated business rules could make it harder for rivals to compete. Put together, AGCM says the changes might limit market access and give Meta too much power in the growing AI chatbot space.

Meta pushed back, saying the whole point was simply to give Italian users the same AI features available in other countries. The company also says it’s been working with regulators throughout the process. Meta only rolled out its AI assistant in Europe earlier this year after months of delays tied to privacy and data-use rules. Europe continues to be the biggest speed bump in Meta’s AI expansion plans. Investors will watch whether this turns into a broader EU-wide fight.
