Meta Tests Allowing Links in Instagram Captions, But It’s Pretty Limited to Start

Instagram creators have been calling for the option to add external links in captions ever since the service first debuted, and it’s finally happening, albeit in a limited test. You may soon spot them in posts from select accounts, but there are restrictions that will likely make them rare.

First spotted by blogger Andrea Valeria, Meta later confirmed to Engadget that it’s testing the option to add links to captions for select Meta Verified subscribers. The brand has yet to share who is involved in the test and why they’ve been selected for the trial.

Valeria spotted the option to add clickable links to their Instagram posts and included a link to their Substack. She says an in-app message told her she could do so, but confirmed she’s limited to 10 links a month.

The link on Valeria’s post is visible on the mobile version of Instagram, but it doesn’t appear when viewing in a browser. That may be a bug in Meta’s early testing.

The restriction to Meta Verified subscribers suggests the average user likely won’t be able to use links like this in the future, and it may be exclusive to paying subscribers.

Instagram’s lack of caption linking has led people to use third-party services like Linktree, which allow creators to add external links in their bios. However, this requires more work for audiences to seek out links, and linking directly in the bio may lead to broader use.

Instagram continues to allow links in Stories, an option available to all users and not tied to a Meta Verified subscription.
