Meta tests ‘Instagram Plus’ subscription with exclusive features for users

March 30, 2026

New Delhi: Meta Platforms has begun testing a premium subscription on Instagram, introducing a set of paid features under the name “Instagram Plus”, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The development comes roughly two months after Meta indicated it was exploring subscription-based features across its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

The test includes a range of additional tools for users. One of the features allows subscribers to view Stories, temporary posts that disappear after 24 hours, without notifying the original poster. Users on the plan can also access data showing how many times their own Stories have been rewatched.

The subscription further introduces expanded audience controls. Instead of being limited to a single “Close Friends” list, users can create multiple custom groups to determine who can view specific Stories. Subscribers are also able to extend the visibility of a Story by an additional 24 hours and highlight one Story per week to increase its prominence in followers’ feeds.

Other features include the option to send animated “Superlikes” on Stories and a search function within the viewer list, making it easier to check whether a particular user has viewed a post.

Meta has not disclosed the full list of countries where the test is being conducted. However, TechCrunch reported that user-shared screenshots suggest the feature is being trialled in markets such as Mexico, Japan and Philippines.

Pricing appears to vary by region. According to the report, the subscription is priced at MX$39 per month in Mexico (approximately $2.20), ¥319 in Japan (around $2), and PHP 65 in the Philippines (about $1.07).

The offering is distinct from Meta Verified, which is positioned towards creators and businesses and includes features such as verification badges and account protection. Instagram Plus is instead being tested for general users.

While the move could provide Meta with an additional revenue stream, early reactions suggest some resistance, with users expressing concerns over growing subscription costs across digital services.

The company is expected to continue testing the feature before making decisions on a broader rollout, as per the TechCrunch report.
