Meta’s New AI Chip: A Step Towards Independence from Nvidia – News and Statistics

Mar 11, 2025

Social media giant Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly known as Facebook), is stepping into the realm of custom silicon design with the introduction of its first in-house AI training chip. According to a report by Reuters, the company has initiated a preliminary deployment of the chip, setting the stage for more extensive production, contingent on successful outcomes from the testing phase.

In collaboration with TSMC, a prominent Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, Meta has taken a strategic move to mitigate dependence on external suppliers like Nvidia, a pivotal component in its long-term strategy to curtail its hefty infrastructure expenses. Reportedly, Meta has projected its total expenses for 2025 to fall between $114 billion and $119 billion, with up to $65 billion allocated to capital expenditure driving significant investment into AI infrastructure as forecasted by the IndexBox platform.

The chip, part of Meta’s Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) series, is poised to enhance power efficiency, being a dedicated accelerator specifically built for AI tasks. This delineation could present a notable improvement over the conventional integrated GPUs commonly employed for AI workloads.

With the goal of integrating its own chips for training by 2026, Meta’s strategy now includes utilizing their in-house chips for recommender systems and gradually extending their utility to more advanced generative AI products. This development marks a significant shift for the company after previously canceling an in-house custom chip and relying heavily on Nvidia’s GPUs, which have been a cornerstone for powering models like the Llama foundation series.

The introduction of Meta’s custom chip comes at a time when the AI sector is reevaluating the efficacy of expanding large language models, especially as emerging players like DeepSeek introduce cost-effective models optimized for computational efficiency through reliance on inference.
