Meta’s WhatsApp AI Offer Draws Pushback
May 20, 2026
Meta Platforms (META, Financials) is trying to calm European regulators by offering rival AI chatbots limited free access to WhatsApp, but some competitors are not convinced.
The proposal would let outside AI assistants use WhatsApp’s business API in Europe without charge up to a certain message limit. After that, Meta would begin charging fees.
The offer comes as the European Commission reviews whether Meta gave its own AI assistant an unfair advantage on WhatsApp. Regulators are considering whether to require broader access while the investigation continues.
Meta had earlier limited WhatsApp access to Meta AI before changing its policy in March and allowing rivals to use the platform for a fee.
Smaller AI companies said the new offer still falls short. Their concern is simple: Meta AI does not need to use WhatsApp’s API in the same way outside chatbots do.
