The city plans to resurface miles of roads and restore bridges.

MINNEAPOLIS — The City of Minneapolis plans more than $320 million in infrastructure improvements this year.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the city is spearheading 37 projects.

“This is the work that we do as a city, this is the nuts and bolts. We got 1,300 incredible public works employees that are going to be out on the streets throughout our streets, throughout this construction season,” Frey said.

Minneapolis Director of Public Works Tim Sexton said it’s a standard year as far as construction goes, but they are repairing more bridges than usual.

“There are some areas, some neighborhoods, when we talk about bridges, right, that can be a little harder to get around,” he said. “The projects move around the city, so when I say standard, I’m thinking city-wide, but some neighborhoods, if it’s happening outside your house, it’s going to feel like a different construction season.”

Sexton said the city is making big and much-needed investments in infrastructure.

“It’s a big deal. We’re making really big investments in the city, but we also recognize it’s some inconvenience to residents and that happens, and so we want to make sure everyone is aware and knows that we take that very seriously,” he said.

The city will resurface nearly 20 miles of street, reconstruct nearly five miles of street, restore three greenway bridges, rehabilitate nearly 18 miles of water main, and replace 1,827 lead water service lines.

“This year, we will be replacing over 1,800 private lead service lines across neighborhoods all across the City of Minneapolis, including the properties around George Floyd Square. And all these lead lines are being replaced at no cost to residents and business owners,” said Annika Bankston, director of the city’s water treatment and distribution services.

The City of Minneapolis also has a construction map on its website, so people can see what projects are going and how long they will take to complete.
