Model S/X Officially Retire, Tesla Switches Production Line to Humanoid Robots

May 22, 2026

Gasgoo Munich- On May 21, 2026, the final batch of Model S and Model X vehicles rolled off the line at the Fremont factory, marking their official retirement. The production line that once sparked the global electric vehicle revolution will be completely dismantled within four months and reconfigured into a dedicated facility for humanoid robots, boasting an annual capacity of 1 million units. Meanwhile, a second-generation line under construction at the Texas plant is targeting an even more ambitious goal: 10 million units.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Elon Musk declared that the Model S and Model X were “works forged with love.” Their success, he noted, hinged on a team that poured its passion into every detail—even the ones users never see.

The greatest legacy of the Model S and Model X lies in defining the underlying paradigms for the smart cockpit, over-the-air updates, and driver assistance. Today, nearly every intelligent electric vehicle still operates within this framework.

But this farewell serves a greater ambition. Tesla’s humanoid robot is positioned as an all-scenario general-purpose machine for homes, factories, and healthcare, designed to replace humans in repetitive and dangerous physical labor with industrial-grade reliability and low cost. Musk predicts that long-term global demand could reach as high as 10 billion units, creating a market potential that surpasses electric vehicles.

In January of this year, Tesla updated its corporate mission to “build a world of extraordinary abundance.” In Musk’s vision, Robotaxis will revolutionize transportation, while humanoid robots will liberate humanity from drudgery, achieving abundance for society as a whole. This complete overhaul of the production line marks a critical milestone in bringing that new mission to life.
