Moira Walley-Beckett is out as showrunner of Amazon’s planned Fourth Wing adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer has signed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and is being eyed to replace Walley-Beckett as Fourth Wing showrunner. The Fourth Wing TV project hails from Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society.
Schaeffer also wrote the Black Widow movie.
Walley-Beckett was a Breaking Bad writer and producer — she wrote “Ozymandias,” as well as a bunch of other episodes — and she created the series Anne With an E. She also wrote the Flesh and Bone miniseries and penned three episodes of NBC’s highly anticipated flameout Pan Am. Walley-Beckett signed on to showrun Amazon’s Fourth Wing last summer; Fourth Wing has not yet been ordered to series and does not yet have a cast attached.

There are three novels currently out in the series of best-selling romantasy books by Rebecca Yarros, collectively referred to as The Empyrean series. Two more books in the series are expected, but do not yet have titles and/or release dates.
Fourth Wing (May 2023) was the first book in the series. Sequels Iron Flame (November 2023) and Onyx Storm (January 2025) followed. The Fourth Wing series has been in development since October 2023, before book two even arrived.
The Empyrean novels are set at Basgiath War College, where the story’s 20-year-old protagonist Violet Sorrengail must train to become a dragon rider, following in her mom’s military footsteps. The only problem is, Violet is very much not her mom. Well, we guess a second problem would be that dragons are very much dragons.
Executive producers on the Amazon TV version include Jordan and Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, as well as Yarros and the head of Entangled Publishing Liz Pelletier. Outlier Society executive vice president of TV Stefano Agosto will co-executive produce the project.
As THR first reported in October, Netflix is adapting Yarros’ In the Likely Event novel for film.
