Money from Amazon in Perrysburg Township ignores essential services, trustee says

Amazon’s new facility in Perrysburg Township will create 150 jobs and give money to schools, but offers no funding for local emergency services.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio —

A second Amazon facility in Perrysburg Township is set to bring 150 jobs to Wood County.

While schools like Rossford Local Schools and the Penta Career Center will get funding from the deal, Perrysburg Township Trustee Gary Britten says an essential service has been left out.

Britten told WTOL 11 he’s excited about the new Amazon facility, but he’s frustrated the township won’t receive any direct funding to support emergency services.

“I asked (Wood County Economic Director) Wade Gottschalk moving forward to figure out how we can fix this,” Britten said. “I think there needs to be some equal revenue sharing because everybody has to have services and schools have to have the money and the township needs it.”

The Perrysburg Police Department fund is currently in a $1 million shortfall. Britten says the township is already exploring cost-saving measures.

“I think it’s great and the schools need the funding, but I just think that when we have to pull them like we did last night in our meeting after this presentation, pull $1 million out of the general fund to support our police department, it’s not sustainable,” he said.

The levy on the ballot for November is 4.9 mills for five years, and the township is exploring shared dispatch services with the city of Perrysburg or the sheriff’s department to cut costs.

The new Amazon project won’t provide funding to Perrysburg township’s emergency services, but Britten is already pushing for changes in future deals.
