The Ecumenical Worship for the Season of Creation recently brought together over a hundred Christians from various denominations in Nampula, northern Mozambique. This gathering served as a moment for prayer and a powerful display of solidarity in caring for creation, inspired by the encyclical, “Laudato Si’”. Additionally, the event was an opportunity for participants to advocate for peace in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province.

Nampula, the provincial capital and the country’s third-largest city, hosted an ecumenical service for the Season of Creation, representing different Christian denominations. Attendees included Catholics, members of the Evangelical Church of Christ in Mozambique, the Salvation Army, and others. The purpose of the gathering was to underscore the importance of caring for nature as an integral aspect of the Christian faith.

Peace and the environment

Rafael Pedro, a representative of the Laudato Si’ movement, described the event as “a moment for collective prayer and renewed commitment to caring for the Earth—our common home.” He emphasised that the gathering reminded participants of humanity’s responsibility to safeguard God’s creation.

Beyond prayer and the proclamation of the Word, each denomination shared hymns inspired by themes of peace and environmental stewardship, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Pastor Castelo Manuel Bitao of the Evangelical Church of Christ in Mozambique stressed that “creation was entrusted to humans to be cared for and respected, but unfortunately, it continues to be exploited and abused.” Arthur Armando, delegate of the Christian Council of Mozambique, added that true peace encompasses not only the absence of conflict among people but also harmony between humankind and nature.

A call for peace in Cabo Delgado

The assembly also highlighted the detrimental effects of human activities on the planet—ranging from wildfires to industrial pollution—that threaten life and human dignity. The religious leaders urged citizens to commit to environmental protection as part of a broader pursuit of healthy, sustainable living.

In conclusion, appeals for peace in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province were voiced. Church representatives lamented the ongoing conflict and the high deattoll of violence in the region. They called for dialogue, reconciliation, and lasting solutions to restore hope for affected families. It was emphasized that the peace sought must be comprehensive—encompassing harmony among humans, with God, and with nature.
