New Boston Celtics co-owner revealed after $1 billion investment (report)

May 22, 2025

More details are starting to come out from the Celtics’ sale to William Chisholm and the incoming new ownership group. Per Sportico, a member of one of India’s richest families is investing $1 billion as part of the Celtics. Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, will reportedly be the second-largest stakeholder of the Celtics.

Chisholm will be the largest stakeholder of the ownership group as he will take over as team governor from Wyc Grousbeck following the 2027-28 season. Sportico reports that Mittal could be the potential alternate governor in the future. The Celtics were sold for a record $6.1 billion to Chisholm and his group.

When Chisholm’s ownership group was announced as the winning bid in March, the deal had not been fully financed. There were reports of Chisholm continuing to raise money since then as Mittal helped close the gap. The deal is still pending approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors, which will come later this summer.

Mittal is the son of Lakshmi Mittal, who is the executive chairman of ArcelorMittal. It is the second-largest steelmaking company in the world. Aditya Mittal was appointed CEO in 2021 to succeed his father. Lakshmi Mittal is also on the board of Goldman Sachs, which Sportico reported was the financial advisor for Chisholm’s group.

When the deal was announced, private equity group Sixth Street was listed as part of Chisholm’s group. The NBA’s private equity rules cap up to 20% stakes in teams, but Sportico reports that Sixth Street will own about 12.5% of the team. Sixth Street also owns a stake in the Spurs. Other known members of the ownership group include Bruce A Beal Jr. and Rob Hale, a current minority owner.

The Celtics enter an uncertain offseason when it comes to their roster following their second-round loss to the Knicks. The roster is set to be expensive, so they’ll need to shed salary going forward, otherwise they face record-breaking luxury tax penalties. Jayson Tatum’s ruptured Achilles tendon also factors into the conversation.

How this new ownership group will operate is also another question mark. Grousbeck is expected to remain in charge as governor for a few more seasons as that was a big part of the Celtics sale. But Chisholm will be the guy soon and how his group guides the winningest franchise in the NBA will be seen in the coming years.
