New airport solar panels mark ‘milestone’ year
Jersey ElectricityAn array of solar panels at Jersey Airport have been brought online.
Jersey Electricity said the solar panels at the airport cargo terminal would generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 60 all-electric homes each year for the next 25 years.
It covers 3,200m2 of roof space and was expected to produce nearly 420,000 kW annually.
Ports of Jersey said the project is an example of how it can use its infrastructure “to support the Island’s sustainability goals”.
“We’re proud to partner with Jersey Electricity on this important renewable energy project,” said Matt Thomas chief executive of Ports of Jersey.
“Installing solar panels on our cargo terminal roof demonstrates how we can use our infrastructure to support the Island’s sustainability goals.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and working collaboratively to create a cleaner, greener future for Jersey.”
Jersey Electricity said 2025 had been “a milestone year” for locally-generated solar power.
“It’s been great to collaborate with Ports on this latest commercial rooftop solar installation,” said Chris Ambler, CEO of Jersey Electricity.
“This project will create an income stream for Ports, the building owners, and it will help JE by generating power with a largely stable cost structure over the next 25 years.
“2025 has been a milestone year for locally-generated solar, with new rooftop partnerships and the Island’s first solar farm being commissioned,” he said.
“Looking ahead, we’ll continue to see more solar power making a positive contribution to our Island’s sustainability goals.”
