Not so long ago, Raúl Torrez was a New Mexico county prosecutor, focused on putting murderers and members of drug cartels behind bars. Now the state’s attorney general, Torrez is arguably one of the most prominent tech industry enforcers in the world following New Mexico’s first-of-its-kind verdict that Meta Platforms’ design and operation of Facebook and Instagram violated a state consumer protection law. As a remedy trial against Meta began in Santa Fe this week, Torrez told MLex in an interview that he won’t be intimidated by Meta’s warning that it might shutter its apps in New Mexico of the state wins the remedies it seeks. “I put cartel guys and murderers in prison. I’m not scared by Mark Zuckerberg saying he’s going to grab his ball and go home,” Torrez said.
