New report highlights need for clearer biodiversity reporting in the renewable energy transition

March 12, 2026

Addressing a fragmented reporting landscape

The rapid scale-up of renewable energy and grid infrastructure is essential for meeting global climate goals. However, the current landscape for environmental reporting remains fragmented, making it difficult to compare performance across projects and demonstrate tangible biodiversity outcomes.

To help address this challenge, GINGR has published a new ‘Snapshot Report on Environmental Reporting for Renewables and Grids’. The report, commissioned by GINGR, was authored by The Biodiversity Consultancy and examines existing biodiversity reporting frameworks, identifying key gaps and opportunities for greater alignment.

The report distils findings from a broader scoping exercise analysing how environmental reporting is currently applied across the sector, including the role of emerging disclosure standards and financial sector expectations.

Moving beyond compliance

The report finds that while numerous reporting frameworks exist, they are not always aligned and often struggle to capture the cumulative and context-specific impacts associated with renewable energy infrastructure.

Rather than proposing a new reporting framework, the report highlights the importance of improving coherence across existing systems.

Key priorities include:

  • Developing standardised and decision-ready biodiversity metrics
  • Strengthening monitoring and verification of environmental outcomes
  • Integrating biodiversity considerations earlier in project planning
  • Better linking project-level reporting to global biodiversity goals

Improving these elements can help governments, developers, and financial institutions better assess the biodiversity performance of renewable energy projects while strengthening transparency and trust among stakeholders.

Launching the findings through global dialogue

The report’s findings were presented during a webinar hosted by GINGR and The Biodiversity Consultancy on 11 March 2026.

The session opened with remarks from IUCN’s Global Energy Transition Lead, Rachel Asante-Owusu, who highlighted the importance of credible environmental reporting in enabling a Nature-Positive and People-Positive energy transition.

The report’s main findings were presented by Dr. Paris Stefanoudis of The Biodiversity Consultancy, who discussed practical steps to improve alignment, transparency, and comparability in biodiversity reporting across the renewables and grids sector.

Supporting a Nature-Positive energy transition

As investment in renewable energy accelerates, credible biodiversity reporting will play a critical role in demonstrating that the energy transition delivers real benefits for ecosystems and communities.

By strengthening alignment across reporting systems and focusing on measurable outcomes, stakeholders across the sector can move towards a more transparent, coherent, and impact-driven approach to biodiversity accountability.
