New Twitchell Lake website features area history and environment
January 16, 2026
Twitchell Lake is one of the most inhabited lakes in the Adirondacks. Located in Big Moose, the lake is surrounded by the Forest Preserve on three sides.
A new Twitchell Lake website displays how history unfolded in this corner of the Adirondack Park. Created by the Twitchell Lake History Committee, chaired by Dan Conable, the website complements an accompanying book the committee is also working on and hopes in release in early 2027. Conable serves as editor of the book, while the the rest of the committee helps with lake camp histories and managing the website.
The website is organized around five exhibits: Mapping Twitchell, Twitchell Through Time, Window on Wilderness, Engaging with Adirondackers and the Twitchell Photo Archive.
Mapping Twitchell geolocates memorials and sites on topographical maps. Twitchell Through Time takes visitors from the 1700s to the present on three timelines: people and biography, news and events and research and history. Window on Wilderness invites visitors on a tour through seasons of flora and fauna on the shoreline and along trails, with special features on ferns, the monarch butterfly and the common loon. Engaging with Adirondacker’s ask visitors to submit a story, ask a question or offer feedback. Contributions of historical materials that deal specifically with the history of Twitchell Lake are sought. The Twitchell Photo Archive organizes a cache of pictures, antique and contemporary, in eight categories: camps, hotels, events, lake views, people, roads, plants and animals and shots of life in Big Moose.
The website also contains a year-round events calendar for the central Adirondacks and a kid’s page which offers rainy-day activities provided by educator Sheri Amsel, author of “The Big Adirondack Activity Book.”
