New Waste Management facility creates local jobs, helps environment

Waste Management is investing $12 million in their new hauling site, creating more local jobs and helping protect the environment.

The 21,000 sq. ft. facility in Lincoln Park is designed to support WM’s 100 percent alternative fuel fleet, including their 30 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks.

“This particular facility that we’re standing in today is our maintenance facility, so you can see behind me the automated side load truck that is up on the truck lifts. That’s a typical position that that truck is in, so technicians would be inspecting our trucks to make sure that they’re not leaking any oils that we’re maintaining our trucks the right way so that we’re safe for the community and safe for the environment.”

Pete Vandussen, Are Fleet Director for WM says the site is equipped with alarms, sensors, and automatic doors, making it CNG compliant so their trucks can safely serve their 20,000 local customers.

“What that means is that our CNG trucks produce 95% less NOx than a traditional diesel fleet,” said Vandussen. “That’s better for our environment, better for our community, and really aligns with the sustainability goals of Waste Management.”

Vandussen also says the facility will create 50 jobs for Duluth residents, including drivers, technicians, and administrative staff.

The new hauling site fits six trucks. Vandussen hopes to build more hauling sites like this for their 24 other trucks.

Waste Management currently has driver and technician positions available in Duluth. Additional positions will be added or updated here.
