The big day has finally arrived. The Nintendo Switch 2 is now officially available in stores (and we’re already in line). While we’ve already gotten a couple of detailed hands-on opportunities for the Switch 2, we now have unfettered access to the new $449 Nintendo portable console with its day one software installed.

Just joining us? Start by jumping into our Engadget Podcast livestream on YouTube, where Sam Rutherford and Devindra Hardawar are sharing their impressions and taking your questions.

Today is launch day, but it’s not our first experience with the Switch 2. Check out our earlier coverage to catch up on all the relevant details so far:

Live12 updates

  • Makes sense Kris, here is a shot of the line at the flagship Nintendo Store in NYC last night. It was almost a full block long.

  • I wasn’t taking any chances with getting a Switch 2 as soon as possible. At one point, I had locked in four (4) pre-orders, including one from the UK that would have only cost a few dollars more than buying the console locally, even factoring in import fees. I’m down to two now, one for me and another for a friend.

And one of them just showed up! I can’t promise I wasn’t doing the Scott Pilgrim thing of plunking sitting myself by my door ahead of its arrival. I’m now waiting (im)patiently for the day-one update to install so I can jump into Mario Kart World in a few mi— I mean, when I clock out for the day.

  • What’s going on with Target preorders? Folks around the internet, myself included, got a preorder in at around midnight, but Target still says the units are “preparing to ship” with an estimated June 11 delivery date. Did it fumble the ball or what? Preparing to ship?! Target, the thing is out.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Cherlynn has acquired a Switch 2, after waiting in line at her local GameStop all morning.

I’ll leave it to her to provide the backstory soon.

  • Devindra is prepping for the live YouTube podcast in his home studio, but here’s how things played out for him last night.

  • To reiterate Sam’s note above: He and Devindra Hardawar will be streaming live on YouTube in just a few mintues (11 AM ET / 8 AM PT). Both of them have the Switch 2, and will be sharing real-time first impressions.

  • Anyways, I’m about to hop on the Engadget Podcast to talk more about the Switch 2’s launch, so I’ll be back later with more. But in the meantime, check us out on YouTube as we’ll be streaming the podcast live, starting at around 11 AM ET.

  • The president of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser was also there to say a few remarks just ahead of the launch. He toughed it out even though he said he was suffering from a case of laryn

  • I actually stopped by the flagship Nintendo Store in NYC last night for the launch.

There were a handful of celebs in attendance including Bowen Yang from SNL, who was actually wearing a Nintendo DS shirt, which was pretty cool.

I also saw some YouTubers like Scott the Woz. But I’m sure I missed a bunch, it’s getting harder and harder to keep tabs on who’s hot on YouTube.

  • Yea, it was a real event between lines forming up outside of stores yesterday combined with the launch itself.

  • This was the scene right before midnight at a GameStop in Vancouver, BC, as captured by Engadget’s Steve Dent. It was one of many stores that had midnight launch events.
