Although medical marijuana is legal in Hawaii — recreational uses also are legal in numerous other states — the state-sanctioned dispensaries still face barriers to banking services and other legal issues. This is due to the fact that cannabis still is federally classified as a Schedule I drug, the same class as heroin and LSD. President Donald Trump is looking into reclassifying it, a widely popular idea.
However, it’s not clear that the rescheduling would make all such problems disappear, experts have said. That likely would take federal legalization, and that is a long shot.
