Ohio adult-use cannabis sales near quarter-billion in first five months of program
January 7, 2025
Monthly revenues double the state’s medical-only figures; average prices drop 20% since August launch as the market matures.
Ohio’s recreational marijuana market surpassed $242 million in sales through late December, rounding out a relatively strong debut for the Midwestern state’s adult-use program.
Total recreational marijuana sales hit $242.2 million since the August launch, with consumers purchasing 32,487 pounds of cannabis flower and more than 4 million manufactured products, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control reported.
The sales milestone comes about five months after Ohio began allowing recreational sales, following voter approval in 2023. Monthly sales have stabilized around $73 million, more than double the $36 million to $37 million in monthly medical cannabis sales before the recreational market opened, according to state data.
The state has licensed 124 dispensaries to sell both medical and recreational cannabis. However, more than 120 Ohio municipalities and townships have banned adult-use cannabis sales through local moratoriums as of mid-December, according to Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law, the Ohio Capital Journal reported.
Average prices have declined since sales began. Flower prices dropped about 20% from $26.59 per tenth of an ounce in early August to $21.15 in December. Manufactured product prices decreased roughly 8% to $28.42 per unit over the same period, state figures show.
The state could expand retail access further through up to 100 additional store licenses, known as 10(B) licenses, though timing remains unclear. During the first week of December, Ohio officially surpassed $200 million in adult-use sales, while total medical sales since January 2019 have eclipsed $2 billion, according to division data.
“While sales have seemingly hit a plateau for now, the fact they’ve generally stayed there for several months instead of decreasing is a promising sign for industry operators who believe there is room to grow from here,” said Jeremy Nobile of Crain’s Cleveland wrote last month.
Market research firm New Frontier Research projects Ohio’s marijuana market could reach $3.88 billion in annual sales by 2030, with recreational purchases accounting for about 74%. A separate analysis by cannabis data firm Headset estimates the total market could mature to about $2.1 billion in yearly sales based on per-capita consumption, Crain’s Cleveland reported.
