The European hydrogen sector has been boosted by the news that OMV is constructing a 140 MW hydrogen electrolyzer in Austria’s Bruck an der Leitha region. The proclivity for alternative power solutions has been evident in the European continent over the past few years as more and more nations turn to the untapped energy resource to meet an increase in energy demand from renewable energy projects. Europe has seen a vast litany of nations aiming to decarbonize the energy sector to meet emission goals while still providing essential electricity for its populace.

The planned 140 MW plant will be the largest in Austria as well as in South-Eastern Europe

The planned electrolyzer plant will feature the latest in hydrogen conversion technology and is among the five largest of its kind in Europe. The plant is located in the Bruck an der Leitha region of Austria and is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027. In a statement to the press, OMV’s leadership praised the progress that has already been made in the project being commissioned.

OMV is constructing a hydrogen pipeline to connect the facility to the refinery in Schwechat

OMV clearly has big plans for the project to become exemplary of its commitment to the hydrogen sector. It has noted that it will build a 13-mile pipeline to transport the hydrogen from the plant in Bruck an der Leitha to its refinery in Schwechat.

The project was positively assessed by the European Hydrogen Bank for funding, and the agreement is currently being finalized in cooperation with the Austrian promotional bank Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH.
