Open Thread: Amazon Prime delivers on the Spurs Emirates Cup competition

November 8, 2025

Last night the Spurs played their first Emirates Cup game against the I-10 rival Houston Rockets. I was taken aback when I saw the game was on Amazon Prime, part of an 11-year contract. I was nervous that the games were only available live. I was pleased to be able to watch the game when I returned home last night.

The pregame show consisted of NBA greats Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Blake Griffin, and Udonis Haslem. Their camaraderie is distinctly amiable compared to the humor and sarcasm that permeates on Inside the NBA. There is a comparison in having ex-players with that much knowledge sitting together and analyzing games. The basketball IQ on Amazon Prime quotient is off the charts. I quite enjoyed it.

One honorable mention regarding the game. Jeremy Sochan was on the receiving end of a Flagrant 1 technical foul at the hands of Amen Thompson. Sochan shot both free throws with two hands, deviating from his tried and true single hand form.

Spurs play the Pelicans tonight on the second game of a back to back, or SEGABABA. They played the Pelicans on October 24th and won in overtime. This is their second meeting of four this season.
