OPINION: The realities of working in Vermont’s cannabis industry: beyond the bud

April 23, 2025

When people hear I work in cannabis, the reactions are usually the same:

“That must be the coolest job ever.”

And the truth? Yeah. It kind of is.

But it’s also following compliance, customer service, meeting deadlines, and staying on top of everything while making sure nothing slips through the cracks. Sometimes it feels like there’s a constant push to keep everything running smoothly — but it’s totally worth it.

From Budtender to Marketing Manager

I started out just like many others do in this industry — as a budtender. It was fun, fast-paced, and rewarding. You learn people’s routines, their stories, their medical needs, and their favorite strains. Some folks walk in anxious and walk out smiling. You never forget that feeling.

It’s a crash course in cannabis education, retail resilience, and people skills. And yes, there are perks: most employers offer a staff discount, and you get samples to try new products. How generous that is depends on the company.

Over time, I found myself diving deeper into the storytelling side of the industry — the branding, the culture, the why. I wanted to do more than recommend good weed. I wanted to show people why it mattered and get into the behind-the-scenes.

Now, I’m a marketing manager, and I get to craft the voice of the brand I believe in. I get to connect the dots between great product, real people, and meaningful messaging. And I get to work with a team that loves what they do.

The Retail Reality

Here’s the deal: if you’re in the dispensary side of things, it’s a lot like retail. You clock in, help customers, manage inventory, and keep everything running smoothly and legally.

What makes it different?

  • You’re helping people feel better, heal, or have a better night’s sleep.
  • You’re educating curious customers and celebrating plant medicine.
  • You’re part of a growing movement — pun intended.

It’s not glamorous every day. But it’s meaningful. And for a lot of us, that’s enough.

Is It a Dream Job?

Honestly? For me, yes.

It’s not just about the product. It’s about the community, the creativity, and the culture. I’ve met some of the most genuine, weird, hardworking, passionate people in this industry — and I’ve learned more than I ever expected.

There are still challenges — lack of federal legalization, outdated stigma, restrictive regulations — but there’s also a deep pride in being part of something bigger than yourself.

So, You Want to Work in Weed?

Here’s what I’d tell you:

  • Be ready to hustle.
  • Get a good general weed knowledge (cannabinoids, terpenes, etc.).
  • Be kind.
  • Stay curious.
  • And find a place that treats their people like they matter — because the best cannabis companies love their people as much as they love the plant.

Almost three years in, and I’m still learning, still growing, and still grateful.

Because this really is the dream.

Pro Tip: Get Your ID Card, Fingerprints, and Background Check Done First

If you’re serious about working in Vermont’s cannabis industry, I’d recommend getting your Employee ID card from the Vermont Cannabis Control Board (CCB) before you even apply. It makes a big difference — not only will it save you time later, but it actually looks great on your resume/anpplication and will set you apart during the hiring process.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Apply for your Employee ID card with the CCB.
  2. Get fingerprinted (don’t worry, it’s quick).
  3. Pass the background check.

While it’s not required to have these things to land a job, having them in hand will show employers you’re serious and already prepared!

So, if you’re considering a career in this field, know that it’s more than just a job. It’s a chance to be part of something transformative, to contribute to a community, and to learn and grow every day.
