Package Carriers Reassess Amazon Relationships as USPS Negotiations Break Down

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, a significant challenge in parcel delivery involves the final leg to a customer’s residence. Major carriers have established extensive networks to manage this task.

While Amazon has developed its own delivery infrastructure, it still relies on other services. However, these partnerships are becoming less stable. Recent contract negotiations between Amazon and the United States Postal Service have broken down.

This development follows a prior decision by UPS to significantly cut the volume of packages it handles for Amazon. That carrier cited profitability concerns, specifically a desire to reduce exposure to high-volume, low-margin business.

Amazon has historically leveraged its scale to secure lower delivery costs. The recent carrier actions represent a pushback against this dynamic. The Postal Service appears to be implementing a new system that would require Amazon to bid against other retailers for last-mile delivery access.

Amazon could respond by further expanding its internal delivery network, but its capacity is currently limited, especially in smaller markets. With UPS reducing its role, the Postal Service was viewed as a potential substitute for less accessible areas.

Higher delivery expenses may now be inevitable for Amazon. Its options are to accelerate network build-out or accept increased rates. While theoretically beneficial for other carriers, the historically low profitability of Amazon’s business makes a major expansion of that relationship unattractive for them. Amazon’s stated plans for continued network growth also suggest any volume increase for other carriers would likely be short-term.
