Rollingstone Community School (RCS) is a tuition-free, public, charter school that promotes placed-based learning. In short, place-based learning is using our available nature space and community as a learning tool to help our students grow socially and academically. RCS has done this in a variety of ways that include using our nature trails to hike throughout the different seasons to see the trees changes and how the ice freezes and thaws on the ponds. In the spring and summer months, we use our huge garden to plant produce to let students try.
Additionally, we also invite the community businesses and individuals to our school. Some of those include, but are not limited to, The Creature Teacher, local authors, Kiwanis Club, past Rollingstone Community School teachers. and much more! Our partnership with Winona County 4-H is one of the biggest hits among our students. Once a month, Winona County 4-H Extension Educator Mika Riebel visits RCS and has a planned activity that includes a hands-on project. Some of the projects have included making kaleidoscopes, lava lamps, bubble snakes, printmaking, bristle bots, and much more. This partnership has even grown to provide programming over our spring break and during our Summer Care program for additional community members within Rollingstone to enjoy. We love hearing students’ feedback, such as, “I love when 4-H visits!” or “This is the best project ever!” The 4-H partnership is one of our many partnerships that help enhance student learning for students enrolled at RCS.
