Plano ISD middle school building temporarily closed for environmental remediation

PLANO, Texas — A Plano ISD middle school building will be closed next week for environmental remediation, according to a message on the school’s website

Plano ISD’s Murphy Middle School in the 600 block of N. Murphy Road in Murphy will be closed Oct. 6-10 “out of an abundance of caution” for the environmental remediation, the school said.

The school says the decision came after two independent air quality assessments were done after members of the community raised concerns. The school said the findings showed areas impacted by “elevated humidity and changing conditions,” but neither study detected black mold on the campus.

“While initial cleaning addressed early findings, subsequent results revealed additional areas impacted by elevated humidity and changing conditions,” the message on the school’s website read. “Remediation will include carpet replacement in some areas, HVAC cleaning, surface disinfecting, installation of dehumidifiers and air purifiers, and window resealing.”

The school says an “alternate learning plan” will start Oct. 7.

“Scheduling this work ahead of fall break allows for thorough mitigation with minimal disruption,” the message said. “Plano ISD remains committed to the health and safety of students and staff. Updates will be shared as remediation progresses.”
