Energy storage system planned near village
Trevor Littlewood/GeographPlans have been unveiled to build a 100MW battery energy storage system (BESS) near Selby.
Developer Brockwell Energy has proposed to build the BESS on land to the south-east of the A645 near Drax Golf Course at Camblesforth.
The company said it was working on a planning application for the New Oak Energy Storage scheme for submission to North Yorkshire Council, and has invited residents to attend an online webinar.
Gary Bird, head of project development at Brockwell Energy, said: “If consented, New Oak Energy Storage will play an important role in ensuring that the United Kingdom has a secure, domestic green energy supply.”
He added: “We hope members of the local community will attend the event so that we can provide further details of our proposals, answer any questions and gather feedback.”
The Planning Inspectorate is also looking at plans for a 190MW Helios solar farm to the west of Camblesforth, which have been the subject of criticism from campaign group Halt.
Halt campaigner Pam Spreckley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she was “absolutely furious” about the New Oak plans.
She said: “These battery storage units are dangerous and noisy.”
Brockwell Energy said its site had been chosen as it was near existing power lines and close to an agreed National Grid connection near to Drax power station.
BESS plants are designed to store green energy when demand is low and then release it into the grid when demand rises.
Critics however say the plants could pose a fire risk and damage rural landscapes.
An online webinar about the New Oak proposal will take place from 18:00 BST on 8 April.
