Police arrest man who stabbed store clerk, pedestrian after credit card declines

UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica Police Department made an arrest following an investigation stabbings in the city.
Police arrested Daniel Namutereza, 22 of Utica. He is facing charges of assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said on May 4 around 5 p.m., officers responded to a convenience store on Bleecker Street for a report of the assault.
An investigation determined that Namutereza, who was in a dark sweat suit, tried to make a large purchase at the convenience store but his credit card was declined. He then tried to make a smaller purchase and began arguing with the store clerk over the transactions.
Police said Namutereza brandished the knife and stabbed the clerk in the face, causing a large cut. He then left the store and stabbed a pedestrian in the chest. This attack was unprovoked.
Police noted, that as investigators were speaking with victims in the hospital, another call was received regarding Namutereza threatening people with a knife in the North Utica Plaza. He then fled the area.
On May 5, police received information regarding Namutereza’s identity. Members of the NY/NJ Marshall’s Regional Task Force conducted surveillance of his residence and upon Namutereza exiting it, he was immediately taken into custody and brought to the Utica Police Department.
Police said additional charges are likely.
