A police raid on a derelict school in the Highlands has uncovered a cannabis farm with an estimated value of £7.1m.

The force said officers discovered the “sophisticated” operation while executing a warrant at the former Wick High School last week.

More than 5,900 cannabis plants and dried cannabis with a potential value of £450,000 were uncovered.

Seven people were arrested during the raid – six men aged between 23 and 46 and a 17-year-old boy. They were charged and appeared in court on Friday.

Det Insp Phoebe McDaid said it was a “significant recovery”.

She said: “We’d like to thank our partner agencies for their cooperation in ensuring this operation was a success, as well as the local community for their patience and understanding while inquiries were carried out.”

“Drugs cause misery in our communities and the public has an important role to play in helping Police Scotland target those responsible for the cultivation, supply and sale of illegal substances.”

The school has been empty since 2017.
