DANBURY, Conn. (WABC/CNN/CNN Newsource/WKRC) — Authorities rolled out a vehicle dubbed the “Copsicle” truck in a brand new initiative funded by cannabis tax revenue.
The Danbury Police Department introduced a unique addition to its fleet: an ice cream truck dubbed the “Copsicle.” This initiative aims to foster community relations and provide a refreshing treat during the summer months.
The Copsicle, a restored 1979 Good Humor truck, made its debut at a local summer camp, offering free frozen treats to children. Sergeant Alex Relyea, who leads the department’s Community Affairs Unit, proposed the idea as a means to engage with the city’s youth and reassure Danbury’s diverse immigrant population.
“The contents of the truck are for the kids, the look and appearance of the truck are for the parents, right? Everyone remembers this exact truck showing up to the baseball field when they were kids. How could you not love that?” Sergeant Relyea told WABC.
Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves highlighted the city’s diversity, noting that over 60 languages are spoken in the area.
“This is a way for people to engage our police officers to know that they’re there to serve them, that they can be trusted,” Mayor Alves told the outlet.
Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour expressed optimism about the initiative.
“We just think it’s going to be a good way of connecting a conversation piece to really understand what are the concerns in our community so that we can address them,” Chief Ridenhour said when speaking to WABC’s reporters.
The Copsicle, which cost $36,000, was funded by cannabis tax revenue. So far, the community response has been positive, with no complaints reported.
