Prime Video Pulls the Plug on Kevin Bacon’s Underrated Horror Series After 1 Season

May 17, 2025

Kevin Bacon returned to the small screen with his starring role in The Bondsman, the supernatural action drama series that debuted on Prime Video in April. One month later, the show’s renewal fate has been revealed, and it’s not good news for fans of the show.

Per Deadline, it’s been reported that Amazon has canceled The Bondsman after just one season. The update comes after the show initially had a strong premiere upon arrival on April 3. It cracked the Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings by landing at No. 9 on the Original chart with 563 million minutes of viewing. However, viewership faltered from there, and The Bondsman was out of the Nielsen Top 10 by its second week, though it remains at No. 5 on Prime Video’s Top 10 list.

‘It Will Not Be a Remake’: Tremors Creators Tease New Movie (& Kevin Bacon’s Possible Return) After Winning Back the Rights

The creative team behind 1990’s Tremors win back the rights to the script, talk bringing Kevin Bacon back as Val for a new feature film.

The series had a respectable response with critics as well. It initially debuted with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, though that number has since dropped to 83%, which is still considered to be fresh by the review aggregator. Its audience score is also decent at 76%. It would seem that there just weren’t enough people watching after a month’s time for Amazon to commit to any additional seasons of The Bondsman on Prime Video.

The Bondsman was created by Grainger David. It starred Kevin Bacon as Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who comes back from the dead to send escaped demons back to Hell with the help of his estranged family. The series also starred Jennifer Nettles, Beth Grant, Damon Herriman, Maxwell Jenkins, and Jolene Purdy.

After Massive Cancellations, NBC Renews 2 New Shows With 84% Audience Scores for Second Seasons

Following a cancellation spree, these two shows, which have impressed the audience, scored new renewals.

“I wanted to make it impossibly difficult on Amazon to not give us a Season 2. That was my evil, devious plan to get us picked up,” showrunner Erik Oleson told Collider about ending the show on a cliffhanger. “Yes, there is future story that I want to tell if we’re lucky enough to get another season. I will answer all of your questions and ask new, even more compelling questions if we get a Season 2. Do you hear that Amazon? Please, with sugar on top, give us more episodes.”

The show was a return to the horror genre for Bacon, who got his start by playing a victim in the original Friday the 13th movie. He went on to star in Tremors, a beloved horror comedy film that has a new sequel that’s in early development. There were tentative plans for Bacon to star in a Tremors spinoff series, as he reprised his role in a pilot filmed in 2018 for Syfy, but the show was not picked up. Bacon’s also had several other horror genre roles, including the films Stir of Echoes, Hollow Man, and MaXXXine.

All episodes of The Bondsman are streaming on Prime Video.
