June 7, 2026

Here’s the latest in automotive sales and strategy:

Hyundai posted strong gains for its sedan lineup in May, with sales of the Elantra rising 7% on a year-over-year basis to 16,819 units and sales of the midsize Sonata jumping 39%. Through the first five months of the year, Elantra sales increased 4% to 64,660 vehicles, maintaining its position as Hyundai’s second best-selling model behind the Tucson crossover. Hyundai also reported that sales of the Elantra hybrid climbed 29% in May, setting a record for the month.

Speaking of Hyundai Motor Group, it has begun U.S. production of the hybrid version of Kia’s best-selling Sportage crossover, a move expected to reduce the company’s tariff costs. The first Sportage hybrid rolled off the assembly line last week at Hyundai’s Metaplant in Georgia, marking the first Kia-branded vehicle produced at the facility. Production of the hybrid model previously took place at Kia’s AutoLand plant in Gwangju, South Korea, where imports were subject to a 15% U.S. tariff. The Sportage hybrid also becomes the first hybrid vehicle built at the Georgia plant, according to Automotive News.

Stellantis plans to expand its lineup of high-performance SRT vehicles as part of an effort to attract younger and wealthier buyers while boosting profitability. The automaker aims to sell about 50,000 SRT-branded models annually by 2030 across its Dodge, Ram and Jeep brands. The strategy centers on offering high-margin performance vehicles that can serve as halo products for the broader lineup. In recent years, the 710-horsepower Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat has been the only vehicle carrying the SRT badge.

Hybrid vehicle sales surged in May as consumers responded to higher gasoline prices, according to The Wall Street Journal. Sales of hybrid cars and trucks increased 33% from a year earlier, citing data from Motor Intelligence. The gains came as elevated fuel prices linked to the U.S.-Israel conflict involving Iran pressured household budgets and boosted interest in fuel-efficient vehicles. Dealers reported strong demand for hybrid models, including the Subaru Forester and Crosstrek, despite their higher purchase prices compared with gasoline-powered versions.

Volvo Car reported a 5.5% decline in global vehicle sales during the three months ending in May, citing challenging market conditions across regions. The Swedish automaker sold 178,980 vehicles during the period, down from 189,440 a year earlier. Volvo, which is majority-owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, said the automotive industry, including the premium vehicle segment, continues to face increasing headwinds that affected sales performance. “The automotive industry, including the premium segment, continues to face intensifying headwinds across regions which reflected in the sales performance,” Volvo said.
