Reid Hoffman To Leave Microsoft Board After Nearly A Decade To Focus On AI Biopharma Ventu
June 7, 2026
Reid Hoffman will leave the board of Microsoft after nearly 10 years, ending a tenure that began shortly after the technology giant acquired LinkedIn for $27 billion in 2016.
Microsoft disclosed in a regulatory filing that Hoffman informed the board on Tuesday that he would not seek reelection. He will continue serving as a director until the company’s annual shareholder meeting later this year.
Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn in 2002 and helped build it into the leading professional networking platform before its acquisition by Microsoft. He joined Microsoft’s board in early 2017 following the completion of the transaction.
The departure comes as Hoffman shifts his attention toward new entrepreneurial pursuits, particularly Manas AI, an AI-native biopharmaceutical company he co-founded. During a podcast conversation released Friday with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Hoffman indicated that he had recently told Nadella it was time for him to return to a founder-focused role.
Hoffman has also played a significant role in the artificial intelligence ecosystem. He was among the early backers of OpenAI when the organization launched as a nonprofit in 2015. As Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI deepened through substantial investments and technology collaboration, Hoffman stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2023 to avoid potential conflicts involving both OpenAI and companies backed by venture capital firm Greylock, where he serves as a general partner.
In addition to LinkedIn and OpenAI, Hoffman co-founded AI startup Inflection AI alongside Mustafa Suleyman. In 2024, Microsoft hired Suleyman and several members of Inflection’s team, with Suleyman now leading Microsoft AI and overseeing the company’s generative AI initiatives.
Before launching LinkedIn, Hoffman served as an executive vice president at PayPal. He later became one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent venture capitalists after joining Greylock as a general partner in 2009.
