NEW ORLEANS — Retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré joined a demonstration in Roseland, Louisiana, over the Smitty’s Supply explosion that led to contamination of local waterways and a massive cleanup effort by state environmental agencies.

Residents and community advocates held the protest Saturday in Roseland to raise concerns about possible environmental contamination following a chemical plant explosion last year.

The protest comes more than seven months after an August 2025 explosion and fire at the nearby Smitty’s Supply facility. Residents say concerns remain about contamination and access to safe water.

Organizers say the demonstration will call for environmental testing, cleanup efforts, and protections for children and families in the area. They describe the event as a peaceful protest focused on public health, transparency, and accountability.
