May 15, 2026
New Mexico State University’s Department of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHS&RM) is dedicated to protecting the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors while fostering a secure environment for learning and research. Please review these important reminders:
- NMSU Driver’s permit needed to drive NMSU Vehicles and Utility Carts: To drive university vehicles (owned, rented, leased or loaned) all drivers must have both a current, valid Driver’s License and a NMSU Driving Permit, issued by EHS&RM. Please visit the NMSU Vehicle Driving Permit Guidelines page for additional information. To drive university utility carts (to include golf carts, turf vehicles and small rough terrain vehicles) all drivers must also have both a current valid Driver’s License and a NMSU Utility Cart Permit, issued by EHS&RM. Please visit the Utility Carts page on the EHS&RM website.
- Registration is needed for Programs Involving Minors: All programs involving minors must go through a registration and approval process in accordance with University policy and are required to comply with all applicable rules and regulations. We encourage program coordinators to carefully review these requirements found under our Resource page to ensure a safe, compliant, and successful experience for all participants. We also encourage program coordinators to review the newly revised ARP 16.79 – Programs Involving Minors.
- Registration and flight approval needed to fly drones on NMSU properties: All NMSU owned UAS’s must be registered and insured through EHS&RM after purchase. Once the UAS has been registered and insured and is ready for flight, a flight request must be submitted through Crimson Connection for review and approval. Please visit the UAS Safety Operations page on the EHS&RM website for additional information.
- Annual Updates and Reviews of Emergency Action Plans are due: Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) guide unit-level personnel in responding to critical hazards, including natural disasters, fires, chemical spills, and active shooter situations. The primary goal is to ensure the immediate safety of all staff, students, and visitors. Units must review and update their EAPs annually, submitting the finalized version to Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management at ehsrm@nmsu.edu. For templates and guidance, please visit the Department Plans page on the Emergency Planning and Preparedness website.
- Online Safety training available for all employees: In addition to Training Central, NMSU employees and students can access safety training via the HSI platform. With a library of over 100 titles, this combination of technology and specialized content helps maintain a safe campus while meeting key regulatory and operational compliance requirements. To learn more or request HSI access, please visit theSafety Training page on the EHS&RM website.
- Evidence of Coverage: The NMSU Evidence of Coverage can be found under the Insurance Documents on the EHS&RM website. The Evidence of Coverage is renewed at the beginning of every fiscal year. Please make sure that every NMSU vehicle has the most current version of the Evidence of Coverage available in the glove compartment.
NMSU’s Department of Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management is committed to facilitating campus safety, health and environmental protection by providing and coordinating programs and services that support teaching, learning and research activities. Through these EHS&RM programs and our partnerships with various constituents of the campus and regulatory agencies, we prevent personal injury, recognize and control hazards, minimize risk and loss, and provide leadership in environmental stewardship.
