November 22, 2025
In a joint action that reflects the environmental and solidarity commitment of the province of San Luis, the ‘Peuma’ Solid Waste Recycling and Treatment Plant delivered more than 3,500 kilos of recovered plastic caps to the Garrahan Foundation.
The transfer was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Transporte Libertador, which donated the freight to transport the material.
Circular Economy and Sustainable Management
The initiative is part of the promotion of the circular economy, which seeks to reduce the volume of waste sent to final disposal and reincorporate materials into the production circuit. This model consolidates a sustainable environmental management, where each recovered cap prevents pollution, fosters ecological awareness, and strengthens community participation.
From the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development, they highlighted that these articulations are essential to building a more sustainable province, integrating environmental care with social solidarity.
Solidarity Impact: Support for the Garrahan Foundation
The delivery of caps has special value for the Garrahan Foundation, as the collection program contributes to the financing of medical equipment, infrastructure, and assistance for patients and families.
Each kilo delivered represents a solidarity act that transcends borders, improving the quality of life for thousands of children across the country.
The activity was attended by:
- Ivette Campot, volunteer representative of San Luis for the Garrahan Foundation’s Recycling and Environment Program.
- Lucas Prieto, manager of the Waste Entity.
- Rocío Pereyra, head of the ‘Peuma’ plant.

History of the Recycling and Environment Program
The Recycling and Environment Program of the Garrahan Foundation began in 1999 with paper recycling. Over time, other materials were added:
- 1999: paper.
- 2006: plastic caps.
- 2008: bronze keys.
- 2018: soda cans.
Additionally, recycling campaigns for x-ray plates, cables, CDs, and DVDs have been conducted, and the Scrap Compaction Program was promoted, recycling unused cars, ships, and airplanes.
Environmental Benefits of Recycling
The environmental impact of recycling is significant:
- Each ton of recycled paper replaces the harvest of approximately 10 trees intended for cellulose production.
- Paper recycling reduces landfill waste and decreases the emission of greenhouse gases.
- The manufacture of products from plastic caps avoids the use of oil.
- Bronze recycling reduces the extraction of non-renewable mineral resources.
A Solidarity and Educational Project
The income generated by the program is allocated to:
- The operation and support of Casa Garrahan.
- The purchase of high-tech medical equipment.
- The training and education of the health team.
- Social assistance to low-income children and adolescents in Buenos Aires and the rest of the country.
Additionally, the initiative has a strong educational component, as it promotes a change in habits in society and neighboring countries, instilling the value of environmental care as part of everyday life.
The delivery of more than 3,500 kilos of caps in San Luis demonstrates how the articulation between public institutions, private companies, and social organizations can generate a positive impact on the environment and child health.
The Garrahan Foundation’s program is an example of how solidarity and recycling can go hand in hand, transforming waste into resources and hope for thousands of families in Argentina.
