Pa. nonprofit shows students how to help the environment

“Schuylkill River Greenways” showcases to students what kind of environmental career opportunities are out there.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennyslvania (WPVI) — As part of the nonprofit “Schuylkill River Greenways,” comes an initiative showcasing to students what kind of career opportunities exist.

It’s known as “Schuylkill Environmental Career Opportunities,” or “SECO.”

The program is implemented in Philly Schools, this year the “U-School,” where students will take field trips to learn about potential jobs that help the environment.

“Over six weeks we go to different locations in the watershed to explore environmental careers, …kind of expose them to different opportunities that they can have for internships, volunteer positions, all in the… green environmental career space,” said Education Director at Schuylkill River Greenways, Ayashe Ramey.

It teaches them not only to be interested in helping the environment in their futures, but gives them first-hand experience of what it would look like.

Students visited Philly Foodworks to learn about where their food originates and how it is distributed.

“We believe that food is a utility for all, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We want to feed Philadelphia with local food,” said Operations Manager of Philly Foodworks, Chris Grabowski.

” If any students decided that they wanted to come and do some kind of program with us and work in the future, then that would be amazing,” he continued.
