SDOT fixes hacked crosswalks playing fake audio messages in Seattle neighborhoods.
SEATTLE — The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) said it fixed hacked crosswalk buttons that were altered to play fake audio messages in Seattle’s South Lake Union and University District neighborhoods.
SDOT said in a release Wednesday afternoon it responded to five tampered crosswalks throughout Seattle. The agency will continue to fix tampered push buttons if they are alerted by the public.
Here are the locations with tampered crosswalk push buttons SDOT has responded to:
- 15th Ave NE & NE 45th St
- 15th Ave NE & NE 43rd St
- Brooklyn Ave NE & NE 45th St
- Fairview Ave & Denny Way
- 35th Ave NE & NE 70th St
“The audio recordings at crosswalks play a critical role for people who are blind or have limited vision, helping them to cross streets safely,” SDOT said in its release. “We are concerned that someone would disregard the safety of people to make a political statement.”
SDOT said the public can report tampered crosswalks in the following ways:
- Use the Find It, Fix It app (available on the Google Play Store and iPhone App Store).
- Using this online form
- Call 206-684-ROAD (7623)
- Email 684-ROAD@seattle.gov
