SEATTLE — The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is searching for a hit-and-run suspect who drove over a man in SODO on Friday morning, according to detectives.

The victim is an employee at Kemp’s Cannabis on 1st Ave. South, which is where the incident happened. Co-owner and general manager, Tran Du, told KOMO News the store’s security cameras captured the entire situation.

Security camera footage shows the suspect, a woman, first steal a product from inside the store and begin to walk out without paying. An employee, the victim, can also be seen following the suspect outside after he realized what had happened.

“He [the employee and victim] didn’t try to confront her, but he just wanted to take a picture of her,” Du explained.

Footage from a security camera outside of the building shows the suspect running across the street to get into her car. The victim follows after and stands in front of the car to take a picture of the woman and her license plate, according to Du.

At this point, the suspect begins driving forward and hits the victim. He is picked up by the moving car and eventually pushed off, according to a Seattle police report. The suspect proceeds to drive over the victim, who is now on the ground, and speed away.

“This is somebody’s life that she almost took over $30,” Du claimed.

Both Seattle police and fire responded to the scene, and authorities said the victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center with injuries. Du told KOMO News he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and as of Sunday, the victim was still in the hospital awaiting surgery.

“He has a broken ankle and a concussion,” Du shared. “I mean, that’s I think the best case possibility or scenario for what happened.”

Ultimately, Du said he extremely grateful his employee is still alive.

Police did not arrest anyone on Friday, so Du said he took certain matters in his own hands. His first steps were to contact nearby businesses for additional security camera footage of the suspect driving off. Du said he also contacted other local cannabis stores to see if anyone recognized the suspect as a regular customer.

“Let’s work together because she may be shopping at your store too,” he explained.

Du told KOMO News he’s eager to see the SPD arrest the suspect, while he’s now worried about supporting his employee, the victim, through recovery and unexpected medical costs.

“He’s managing a family on his own, and without an income now, that’s going to be very difficult,” Du added. “Whatever assistance he’s going to get from the government or us, that’s not going to be enough for him to take on these unexpected emergency bills.”

Du also said Kemp’s Cannabis plans to offer a cash reward to anyone with information on the suspect, and he would like to start a fundraising page to help his employee, who wished to remain anonymous.

Det. Eric Muñoz with the SPD confirmed detectives are investigating.

“I just hope that this now becomes a high priority, because we have somebody that tried to kill somebody, that’s out on the streets,” Du said.
